Celebrating Responsible Living

February 22, 2009 Blog 1 comment

As part of my long walk last weekend, I visited the Sustainable Living Festival held at Melbourne’s Federation Square just beside the Yarra River. It was a pretty interesting encounter for me and shows the extent to which environmental and social consciousness has taken root in this cosmopolitan and multi-cultural city. There were also several lessons to be learnt from my walk through the festival which may be useful for event and roadshow organisers in Singapore. They certainly pull out all of the stops to make the experience as thematic and holistic as they come – albeit in a socially responsible manner.

The only thing I can’t bring back though is the weather. Even though it is summer here in Melbourne, the temperature was a nice cool 22 to 23 deg Celcius, and the cool winds and dry weather made it even more comfortable.

Anyway, here goes…

A Blast from the Past

Just returned from the Sound Stories Concert, a celebration of old-time bands from the past at Zouk – the icon of cool in Singapore. Held in conjunction with the Singapore HeritageFest, the bash brought back many vintage acts like Max Surin (of Tokyo Square fame), Matthew and the Mandarins, Vernon Cornelius, Jive Talkin’, and Robert Fernando.

Hosted by the ever effable Brian Richmond, the concert certainly rocks (especially for the…umm… young at heart). As I swayed to the beat of some of the numbers, I realised too that – gasp – I am getting on in years too! This, plus my latest inclination towards listening to Gold 90 FM.

Our party began at Singapore’s number one nightspot of the year. Of course, as it was only about 9 pm when we went in, the regular party-goers hadn’t quite gathered yet.

One of the most common forms of events marketing are roadshows. These can be standalone affairs in shopping malls or be part of a greater themed exhibition and convention.

For years, roadshows have been used by credit card companies, insurance agents and real estate marketers to attract new customers. Often, the aim is to provide a “mini” experience-rich zone to interest potential customers who can then be quickly converted to sign up for whatever packages you have to offer.

Chinatown Crush

Brought the family to the Chinatown Light Up ceremony last night, amidst the drizzling rain, nursing Ethan’s raging fever (he insisted on going nonetheless), and the extraordinary crowds.

As usual, there were the fire crackers popping which ushered in the festivities, as well as the street lights. I found the accompanying reveberations and echoes rather eery – they reminded me of a warzone and sounded like multiple bullets firing away in the night. At certain critical periods, there were even low lying pyrotechnics which lit up the night sky.

What Makes an Event Great?

William Troy Taylor’s wedding-inspired masterpiece at the Singapore Garden Festival.

What are the secret ingredients behind a successful show able to attract the masses and become the talk of the town? How does one stand out from amongst the busloads of events, all competing for one’s share of mind, time and wallet? Are all festivals the same or are some destined for greatness while others, doomed for failure?

My recent visit to the Singapore Garden Festival triggered some fresh insights on what makes an event or exhibition delightful and memorable. Much of it, as you may have guessed, comes from months and weeks of hard behind-the-scenes work.

The Hanging Gardens of Singapore

Merry Christmas dear visitors! Hope to add some yule-tide cheer with some greenery here.

I was recently invited for the Singapore Garden Festival as part of the delegation from the Association of Singapore Attractions. Despite only having an hour-and-a-half to do a whirlwind tour, I was left gushing after the amazing experience. The National Parks Board has done many things right this time around for the festival.

Here are some highlights of the show for the benefit of those who missed it.
