I recently attended a talk on Casino Marketing by Daniel Shummy, a Las Vegas marketing veteran. One of the most interesting topics he shared was how Niagara Falls transformed itself.

Do you know that the Central Fire Station was once Singapore’s highest lookout point? Back in the old days, fire fighters would climb up the tower to look out for fires in the city using their naked eyes. That was one of the interesting facts I discovered recently at the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery, which is opened by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
A member of the Museum Roundtable, this boutique attraction shares the story of Singapore’s excellent fire services (they are a Singapore Quality Award winner) as well as some of the major crises which they handled. Located along Hill Street, admission is free to the public.
About a month ago, in a sudden whimsical flight of fancy, we decided to follow the flock and make our way to the Jurong Bird Park. Part of Wildlife Reserves Singapore, Jurong Bird Park is a multi-award winning attraction. It is famed for having the world’s largest aviary and manmade waterfall. Unfortunately due to the deadly avian flu scare, it has lost some of its lustre with the locals.

About two months back (yeah this post is long overdue), I brought my family to the Singapore Zoo. This is one of our favourite hang outs for many reasons, some of which I have blogged about here. Attracting close to a million visitors a year, the Singapore Zoo has attained pinnacle position in the Singapore Tourism Awards for many years running. It is also a media darling, generating publicity for anything from animal births, conservation championing, escaping cats to goring elephants.
These signages complete with different animal showtimes help us to plot our journey through the wildlife park.
To celebrate International Museum Day which is also part of my work, I brought my family last week to the NEWater Visitor Centre, located at Koh Sek Lim Road off Upper Changi Road East.
In case you do not already know, NEWater was one of the great stories of invention in the time of need. Many would know that it is largely driven by Singapore’s lack of this essential liquid resource. Its launch spun off many positive stories in the media, and resulted in water scarce Singapore producing companies like Hyflux, one of the leading players in the water industry today and a darling of the local bourses.
Science Centre’s Roadshow on Chinese Inventions at Chinatown Point
One of the most common forms of events marketing are roadshows. These can be standalone affairs in shopping malls or be part of a greater themed exhibition and convention.
For years, roadshows have been used by credit card companies, insurance agents and real estate marketers to attract new customers. Often, the aim is to provide a “mini” experience-rich zone to interest potential customers who can then be quickly converted to sign up for whatever packages you have to offer.

With about 45 minutes to kill after breakfast and before Ethan’s Chinese enrichment classes, my family decided to frolick this hilly green oasis in the middle of our concrete jungle. It was a certainly a pleasant walk in the park even with the warm midday sun beating down upon us.
Our climb started with a peek at the map of Fort Canning located beside the stairs.
My family loves to go to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, one of our island’s most well-loved tourist attractions which draw about 3 million visitors annually. Its enticing mix of free admission, beautiful 52 hectare landscape, awe-inspiring greenery and thoughtful touches makes it a must visit for us. We always feel rejuvenated after our trips there.
Our journey begins near the Visitor’s Centre section of the Gardens. Most of the amenities are located near here.
Yesterday morning, we did our usual pilgrimage to Hay’s Dairies (upon the request of our kid, who else) and I had the chance to use my new Panasonic DMC-FX01 camera. Our journey to the North West took almost an hour from our home down under. The trip was pretty rough for a 3.5 year old.
Last Sunday morning, I took my family to Sentosa and spent a couple of hours there.
We visited Sentosa’s Merlion, which is a 10-storeyed attraction on the island and also spent some time walking around the island. Despite being very regular visitors to Sentosa (which is pretty close to my home near Mount Faber), I always found it refreshing to go there. The mix of sun, sand, sea and smiles (by service oriented staff) never fail to make my day.
The island attraction has certainly improved by leaps and bounds over the years, and everybody is waiting with bated breath for the Resorts World Integrated Resort to open there in 3 years time. In fact, this has led Sentosa to be one of the eminent stars at the recent Tourism Awards organised by the Singapore Tourism Board.
