I guess the standards of everything fell during those hard times and never got back up when the economy recovered (well, I guess it never did relinquish its status as THE perfect resort holiday after the very first bombings).

on the point of drivers being pushy- Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Hanoi are exactly the same. They will tell you sob stories too to win your sympathy and gain a bigger tip. it can get very annoying.
