endoh,

Good observation and an oft-repeated theme through the years. The heroes will always get the glory and similarly, people will want to listen to stories of success. Generally speaking, things that are mediocre or moderate do not get the same attention as the superlatives (richest, tallest, sexiest, oldest). I suppose this is why marketing has gained a reputation for being about puffery, bravadour and trumpet blowing!

That's very insightful. On (2)- I'm always amazed how Southwest manage to emerge the winner as low-cost carrier. It's the only US airline that did not report any earnings loss during the economy downtime. We did a case study on Southwest before and found the organization has really interesting culture which served as the company image itself, and part of marketing of course. The LOVE airline. :)

Do you believe that their words convinces the general public more because of their success and riches?

It seems to me so, because half the time a SME sets out to issue such statements, they are not taken as seriously as big time achievers. I think fame and achievements plays a part in how receptive the idea would be.
